MacWhisper Alternative for Windows and Linux: An Honest Comparison
MacWhisper is one of the best offline transcription apps you can buy — if you use a Mac. There is no Windows, Linux or Android version, and none has been announced. If you need the same kind of private, on-device transcription on a Windows PC, or on both Windows and Mac, here is how the 360Converter Offline Transcriber compares: where MacWhisper is better, where we are, and who each one suits.
The short answer
- Only use a Mac? MacWhisper is excellent, cheaper over time (one payment) and supports about 100 languages. Stay with it.
- Need Windows, Linux, or both Windows and Mac? MacWhisper is not an option. The 360Converter Offline Transcriber runs natively on Windows and macOS, with Linux builds on request.
- Long multi-speaker recordings, batch jobs, and AI summaries that must stay on the computer? 360Converter has speaker labels, batch processing, watch folders and a built-in offline AI model. MacWhisper's AI features send text to cloud engines by default.
Is there a MacWhisper for Windows?
No. MacWhisper is built for macOS, and its sister app (sold on the App Store as “Whisper Transcription”) covers iPhone and iPad. As of November 2026 there is no Windows, Linux or Android version and no announced plan for one. Its recent releases need macOS 15 or later, and some newer models run only on Apple Silicon, so even older Intel Macs lose access to parts of it over time.
So the real question for a Windows user is not “how do I get MacWhisper” but “what gives me the same thing — accurate transcription that never leaves my computer — on Windows?”

Where MacWhisper is better
- One payment, forever. MacWhisper Pro is a one-time purchase with lifetime updates. Over several years that costs less than any yearly license, including ours.
- Many more languages. About 100 through Whisper, against our 37. If you transcribe less common languages, check our language list first.
- Choice of engines. Besides its local models, it can use a long list of cloud transcription services when you want them. We are deliberately offline-only.
- Consumer integrations and polish. Notion, Obsidian, Zapier and Make connectors, from an active developer who ships updates often. On a Mac it feels very at home.
- A free version. Its free tier is genuinely usable for small jobs. Our trial includes every feature but transcribes only the first 2 minutes of each file.
Where 360Converter is better
- Windows (and Linux). It runs natively on Windows 10 and 11, uses your NVIDIA, AMD or Intel graphics card, and a Mac version is available too. Linux builds are available on request.
- Speaker labels built for long recordings. Diarization is a dedicated, GPU-accelerated step designed for interviews, depositions and meetings, and you can rename speakers afterwards. See how it works.
- AI that never leaves the computer. Summaries, translation and chat use an offline model that ships with the app. MacWhisper's equivalent features send your text to cloud AI engines unless you install and connect a local model yourself. There is no API key to set up and no text sent to OpenAI or anyone else, which matters for legal, medical and HR work.
- Built for volume. Batch Process takes a whole folder and lets you set language and options per file; watch folders pick up new recordings automatically; and your own programs can send requests over HTTP to a transcription server running on your premises.
- Either side of a call, or both. It records and live-transcribes your microphone, the remote participants (system audio), or both together, so you capture the whole conversation, not just your half.
- More export formats. Word, PDF, TXT, Markdown, HTML, CSV, XML, SRT and VTT subtitles, and a project file for moving work between computers.
- No surprise renewals. Licenses are yearly but never charge you again automatically, and permanent or multi-seat licenses are available for organisations.

Can I run MacWhisper on Windows?
No. MacWhisper is macOS-only and there is no official Windows version. Running macOS in a virtual machine on a PC is not a practical way to use it. Use a transcriber built for Windows instead.
Is the 360Converter Offline Transcriber really offline?
Yes. Transcription, speaker labels, summaries and translation all run on your computer. The internet is used only to activate the license, download models and updates, and check the license from time to time. See every network connection it makes.
Is it as accurate as MacWhisper?
On clear, single-speaker audio, modern offline engines are broadly similar, because they build on the same generation of speech models. The bigger differences are elsewhere: speaker labels on multi-speaker audio, how long files are handled, and which languages you need. The fairest test is your own recording in both free versions.
What does it cost compared with MacWhisper?
MacWhisper Pro is a one-time payment; the 360Converter Offline Transcriber is a yearly license starting at $69.90 that never renews automatically. Over a year or two the cost is similar; over many years MacWhisper is cheaper. Compare our editions to see which features each includes.
